Himachal Police Cracks Down on Drunk Driving with On-the-Spot Arrests

In a strong push to make roads safer, the Himachal Pradesh Police has rolled out strict new measures to tackle drunk driving across the state. The Director General of Police (DGP) has directed all district police chiefs to enforce the rules without compromise, following a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Under the new guidelines:

  • Any driver caught under the influence of alcohol can be arrested immediately, without a warrant.
  • This is backed by Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and can be enforced by any uniformed officer.
  • Once arrested, the individual must be taken to a registered medical practitioner within two hours for examination.
  • If the medical test isn’t completed in time, the person must be released on bail and bond.

This move reflects the government’s zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving and aims to reduce road accidents caused by intoxicated drivers. Police officers have been instructed to follow every step of the SOP strictly, ensuring that enforcement is swift and consistent.
