Himachal introduces real-time bus tracking to improve passenger convenience
In a progressive move to enhance public transport convenience, Himachal Pradesh’s Transport Corporation (HRTC) is testing a Real-Time Passenger Information System (RTPIS) that will allow passengers to track live bus locations with just a click. This system is expected to reduce wait times and make bus travel more efficient and accessible for residents and tourists across the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced that key buses on major routes have been selected for the initial integration of the RTPIS. This initiative is part of a broader state effort to modernize HRTC services, aiming to make public transport more user-friendly and reliable. Once fully implemented, passengers will be able to track their buses in real-time via the HRTC website and through digital screens at major bus stands.
“Passengers will soon be able to view live bus locations directly on their mobile devices through the HRTC website, eliminating long waiting times at bus stops,” Agnihotri explained. The system will also provide estimated arrival times, making it easier for passengers to plan their travel more accurately.
In addition to the website, large screens installed at key bus stations will display real-time bus information, keeping travelers updated on schedules and arrival times. To ensure smooth operations, a control room will be established at the HRTC headquarters to monitor the system closely.
HRTC aims to roll out this service within the next six months. The new system follows guidelines issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and aligns with the state’s vision of transforming HRTC into a modern, hi-tech service provider.
