Foreign Tourist Auto Ride on Shimla’s Mall Road Ends with Fine

What began as a sightseeing trip for a group of foreign tourists in Shimla ended with a penalty after they unknowingly drove an auto-rickshaw onto the city’s iconic Mall Road, an area where vehicular movement is strictly prohibited.

The incident took place on Saturday when locals and visitors noticed an auto-rickshaw travelling along the pedestrian-only stretch of The Mall. The vehicle attracted further attention because it was decorated with a Union Jack theme and also carried an Indian flag.

After receiving information about the unauthorized entry, a police team quickly reached the spot and stopped the vehicle. The tourists were questioned and informed about the restrictions in force on the historic promenade, one of Shimla’s most popular tourist destinations.

During the inquiry, the foreign nationals reportedly told police that they were unaware that vehicles are not permitted on The Mall Road. According to officials, they had entered the area without knowing about the local regulations.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shimla, Gaurav Singh, said that a fine of ₹3,000 was imposed for violating traffic rules. He added that further action would be taken in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The incident has sparked curiosity among visitors and residents alike, as vehicles are rarely seen on The Mall, which is primarily reserved for pedestrians and known for its colonial-era charm, bustling cafes and panoramic views.

Police have once again urged tourists to familiarize themselves with local traffic regulations and restricted zones to avoid such violations during their visit to the hill station.
