Empowering Defence Personnel with Modern Farming Skills at CSKHPKV, Palampur
Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, recently marked the successful conclusion of its fifth long-duration training programme for Indian defence personnel. The course, titled “Protected Cultivation and Value Addition of Vegetables and Horticultural Crops,” focused on equipping participants with practical agricultural skills and entrepreneurial knowledge.
The training, which began on February 9, 2026, brought together 38 dedicated participants from across the armed forces—23 from the Indian Army, 5 from the Indian Navy, and 10 from the Indian Air Force. Over the course of the programme, they gained hands-on experience and insights into modern farming techniques that can open doors to sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The valedictory ceremony was graced by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda as the Chief Guest, while Lt. Col. Harneet Singh Badshah from Alhila Army Station attended as the Special Guest. Both dignitaries acknowledged the importance of such initiatives in preparing defence personnel for future opportunities beyond their service years.
Dr. Vinod Sharma, Director of Extension Education, welcomed the guests and highlighted how such training programmes play a crucial role in building practical skills and encouraging self-reliance. He emphasized that knowledge of protected cultivation and value addition can significantly enhance income potential in agriculture.
In his address, Dr. Panda congratulated the participants for their commitment and enthusiasm. He spoke about the growing importance of modern farming techniques in today’s agricultural landscape and encouraged the trainees to apply what they had learned to promote innovative and profitable farming practices.
Lt. Col. Harneet Singh Badshah also appreciated the university’s efforts, noting that the programme provided valuable exposure and practical learning experiences that can benefit defence personnel during and after their service careers. He commended the faculty and organizers for successfully conducting such a comprehensive training course.
Training Incharge Dr. Lav Bhushan presented an overview of the programme, detailing the course modules, practical sessions, and activities undertaken. He also shared positive feedback from participants, who praised the programme for its hands-on approach and relevance. Dr. Bhushan extended gratitude to the Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR), New Delhi, for supporting the initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding with the university.
The event was attended by several senior members of the university, including Associate Director Extension Dr. Jai Dev, Dean of Post Graduate Studies Dr. G.D. Sharma, Dean of the College of Community Science Dr. Chanderkanta Vats, along with department heads, faculty members, and training coordinators.
CSKHPKV continues to play a proactive role in organizing such skill-building programmes, helping defence personnel explore opportunities in agriculture and horticulture while promoting self-employment and sustainable development.
