Dragged Away by Stray Dogs: Shimla Toddler’s Ordeal Sparks Fresh Outrage Over Street Dog Menace in Shimla
What should have been an ordinary Sunday evening turned into a nightmare for a family in Shimla’s Shankli area when a 20-month-old girl was brutally attacked by two stray dogs while playing outside her home.
The toddler was in the courtyard when she wandered towards the entrance gate. Within moments, two stray dogs passing through the area pounced on her, biting and dragging her away. According to her father, Ramandeep, the dogs dragged the child nearly 25 metres and attempted to take her towards a nearby jungle.
Her desperate cries pierced the evening silence, alerting neighbours who rushed to her rescue. Armed with stones and sheer determination, they managed to chase the dogs away and save the little girl from what could have been an even more tragic outcome.
The child suffered multiple injuries to her face, back and legs and was immediately taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), where she continues to receive treatment.
The horrifying incident has reignited public anger over the growing stray dog problem in Shimla. Residents say they have repeatedly raised concerns about aggressive dogs roaming residential areas, but little has been done to address the issue. Many are now demanding that the Shimla Municipal Corporation take responsibility for the child’s medical treatment and provide compensation to the family.
Locals have also called for the swift identification and relocation of aggressive dogs to secure shelters. Some residents further urged authorities to regulate the feeding of stray animals in public places, arguing that it often leads to larger gatherings of dogs near homes and public spaces.
Shimla Nagrik Sabha president Jagmohan Thakur said the organisation had warned the civic body about the increasing threat posed by stray dogs earlier this month. He questioned the effectiveness of ongoing sterilisation drives, noting that the population of stray dogs and monkeys appears to be growing despite official claims.
The incident has once again raised difficult questions about balancing animal welfare with public safety. For residents, however, the immediate concern is clear: ensuring that children can play outside their homes without fear of such life-threatening attacks.
