Cyber Fraud Alert: Retired officer duped of ₹1 crore in elaborate scam

In a shocking case from the Padhar area of Mandi district, a retired government officer became the target of a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing ₹1 crore to con artists. The scammers initially posed as customs officials and extracted ₹20 lakh from the victim, claiming it was for releasing gifts allegedly sent by a foreign acquaintance. Later, the fraudsters impersonated embassy staff and coaxed another ₹80 lakh from him under the pretext of recovering the earlier loss.

The trouble began when the retired officer connected with a foreign woman on social media. This online acquaintance led him to believe she had sent him valuable gifts. Seizing the opportunity, the scammers spun a tale of customs duties and legal fees, ultimately duping him of his savings.

Authorities have launched an investigation after the victim filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Mandi. Director General of Police (CID) Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging citizens to report cyber fraud incidents immediately by calling the helpline at 1930 or visiting the nearest police station.

This case highlights a disturbing trend of cybercriminals targeting retired professionals, exploiting their trust through social media interactions. Scammers often lure victims with promises of high returns, fake investment schemes, or fabricated personal connections.

To prevent such incidents, authorities recommend:

Avoid engaging with unknown individuals online.

Be wary of unsolicited claims about gifts, parcels, or customs fees.

Verify the authenticity of investment opportunities thoroughly.

Never share personal or financial details over the phone.

Remember that legitimate customs officials will not demand payments via calls.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, stay calm and report it immediately to the cybercrime helpline at 1930. Proactive awareness and caution remain the best defenses against such scams.
