CSIR-IHBT Showcases Innovation and Impact During Ministerial Visit

The CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, welcomed a high-level visit on 28 May 2026 from Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, and Vice President of CSIR. Accompanying him was Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR.

Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and shared an overview of the institute’s ongoing work. He highlighted key initiatives such as the Aroma and Floriculture Missions, which are significantly contributing to strengthening the local economy while also supporting ecological sustainability in the Himalayan region.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kalaiselvi spoke about CSIR’s recent technological advancements and initiatives, noting the important role played by CSIR-IHBT in advancing the bioeconomy through cutting-edge research. She praised the institute’s achievements and expressed confidence in its continued success.

In his address, Dr. Jitendra Singh commended the institute for its scientific excellence and impactful research. He specifically appreciated the work being done in areas like Stevia and Tulip cultivation, as well as the promotion of start-ups. Highlighting the institute’s potential, he said CSIR-IHBT could emerge as a key driver of the Himalayan economy, contributing to the broader vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). He emphasized that scientific advancements must ultimately benefit society and reach people at the grassroots level.

During the visit, the Minister explored an exhibition featuring products developed using technologies from the institute. He also interacted with initiatives aimed at raising awareness, including a selfie point, and took part in efforts related to indigenous production of hing (asafoetida).

A significant highlight of the programme was the signing of several technology transfer agreements with organizations including Chandigarh Sweets Limited (Mohali), E-Hemp Stores Pvt. Ltd. (New Delhi), Praarabdh Society (Mandi, Himachal Pradesh), Kannav Biocreations Pvt. Ltd. (Una, Himachal Pradesh), Krishi Rasayan Pvt. Ltd. (Kolkata), and Parwaaz Organics (Jalandhar, Punjab). In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Himalayan Women, Awareness & Livelihood (HIMWAL) Society, Dehradun, further strengthening collaborative efforts in the region.
