Cloudburst in Manikaran causes significant damage; relief efforts underway

In a tragic turn of events, the picturesque Manikaran Valley in Kullu has been struck by a devastating cloudburst, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Heavy rains, which have recently started in Himachal Pradesh, triggered the cloudburst in the quaint village of Tosh, causing significant damage to shops and hotels. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties, but the impact on the community is profound.

The Leh-Manali Highway NH 03, a vital lifeline for the region, has been closed once again near Palchan due to the relentless downpour. The heavy rains have brought water and debris crashing onto the road, while the Anjani Mahadev stream swelled and altered its course, causing water to spill over the highway. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is working tirelessly to clear the debris and restore the road.

Local reports describe a scene of chaos and loss in Tosh village, where a flash flood swept through the area, washing away temporary sheds, shops, and even a liquor store. The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday night, has left the community reeling. Local administration confirmed that a team from the revenue department has been sent to assess the damage. Residents shared the heartbreaking news that a hotel and shops owned by villagers were among the losses. The torrential rain seemed to target Tosh alone, sparing other parts of Manikaran from the deluge.

This calamity follows closely on the heels of a similar disaster the previous week in Solang Nala, Manali, where a flash flood damaged three houses in Palchan village. On Sunday, rising waters in the Beas River forced the evacuation of four houses in the same area. As a precaution, an orange alert has been issued for Himachal Pradesh on August 1 and 2, warning residents of potential severe weather.

The continued closure of the Leh-Manali National Highway 03 is adding to the woes of the local farmers in Lahaul, who are currently in the midst of cauliflower season. The blocked roads have made it difficult for them to transport their produce, exacerbating an already challenging situation.
