Centre to Take Over Strategic Chamba-Killar Road, Says Harsh Mahajan
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan has welcomed the Union Government’s decision to declare the Chamba–Killar road a Strategic Project of National Importance, describing it as a significant step towards improving connectivity in the remote and tribal areas of Chamba district.
Mahajan said the decision followed his sustained efforts to bring the region’s infrastructure requirements to the attention of the Central Government. The project is expected to improve road connectivity for Churah, Pangi and Killar, where difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions have long posed challenges to transportation.
According to an office memorandum issued by the Ministry of Defence on August 13, 2026, bearing reference number MoD/04/937/2024/D (BR-I), a total of 11 road projects across the country have been declared Strategic Projects of National Importance.
Of these, seven have been placed under Priority-I and four under Priority-II. Three projects linked to Himachal Pradesh feature in the Priority-II category.
The Ministry of Defence memorandum provides for the development and maintenance of the identified projects through the Strategic Road Head Fund under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Chamba–Killar road to be developed to double-lane standards
Mahajan said the Chamba–Killar road has been identified for development to National Highway Double Lane (NHDL) specifications.
The Defence Ministry’s memorandum states that a greenfield road may be considered for construction along the alignment of the existing road under construction up to Killar.
He described the decision as a major development for Chamba district, particularly for residents of Churah, Pangi and Killar, who frequently face difficulties in accessing essential services because of challenging geographical conditions.
“The Chamba–Killar road is not merely a transport corridor. It is a vital lifeline for thousands of people living in remote and tribal areas. Its development will help improve access to healthcare, education, markets and other essential services,” Mahajan said.
He added that improved road connectivity could facilitate tourism, trade, economic activity and the movement of essential supplies while strengthening strategic infrastructure in the region.
Three projects linked to Himachal included in national list
Mahajan said the Defence Ministry’s memorandum identifies three road projects linked to Himachal Pradesh under Priority-II:
* Construction of the Chamba–Killar road to NHDL specifications.
* Construction of the Khanaduti–Lamkhaga Pass–Harsil road to NHDL specifications.
* Construction of the Wangtu–Mud–Attargu road to NHDL specifications.
He said the inclusion of these projects reflects the importance of developing reliable transport infrastructure in mountainous and strategically significant areas.
The projects are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and provide long-term benefits to communities living in geographically isolated locations.
Pathankot–Chamba–Bharmour road another important initiative
Mahajan said strengthening road infrastructure in Chamba district has remained one of his priorities.
He stated that his earlier efforts had contributed to bringing the Pathankot–Chamba–Bharmour road under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
According to Mahajan, the detailed project report for this road is being prepared and includes proposals relating to important passes, tunnels and bridges.
He said the development of the Pathankot–Chamba–Bharmour road, together with the inclusion of the Chamba–Killar road in the national strategic projects list, would provide a foundation for improving the district’s transport network.
“These two initiatives are particularly important for Chamba, where difficult terrain and seasonal disruptions have historically affected connectivity. Strengthening these routes will create new opportunities for the region’s social and economic development,” he said.
Focus on connectivity in tribal and border areas
Mahajan said reliable road infrastructure is essential for residents of remote areas, especially during medical emergencies and periods of adverse weather.
He noted that better roads could improve access to hospitals and educational institutions, facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce and other goods, and encourage tourism-related economic activity.
He expressed confidence that the strategic designation would help advance the development of the Chamba–Killar road and strengthen connectivity in the Pangi valley.
Mahajan thanks Prime Minister and Union Ministers
Mahajan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for the decision.
He said the Union Government’s emphasis on infrastructure development in remote and border regions would benefit districts such as Chamba, where geographical conditions make road construction particularly challenging.
Mahajan reiterated his commitment to raising issues concerning road connectivity, healthcare, education, tourism and other essential infrastructure requirements of Chamba district with the Central Government.
“Ensuring that the development needs of Chamba and its people receive due attention at the national level will remain my priority. I will continue to pursue infrastructure projects that can improve connectivity and create opportunities for the region,” he said.
