A Community Rallies Against the Shadow of Drug Abuse in Solan

Solan witnessed a powerful blend of art and activism as the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS) took its fight against youth drug abuse to the campus of Polytechnic Women’s College, Kandaghat. The heart of the event was a moving performance by a student art troupe from DIET Solan, which used drama and music to lay bare the grim realities of addiction.

The gathering brought together educators, students, and community leaders, creating a shared space for concern and resolution. Prominent figures like District President Dr. B.S. Panwar and State Secretary Satyawan Pundir joined the conversation, underscoring the severity of the issue.

The discussions went beyond warnings. Speakers championed a scientific mindset and the crucial role of family, with a special emphasis on the ‘Maa’ (Mother) campaign to mobilize communities. The call was clear: prevention is key. The idea of fostering positive peer groups in colleges through the ‘DoST’ (Friends) initiative was highlighted as a vital frontline defense.

“The solution lies with us, in our classrooms and our homes,” shared Principal Rakesh Sharma, echoing the collective spirit. The college acknowledged the young artists’ efforts with mementos, celebrating their role as messengers of change.

The campaign’s energy spilled onto the streets of Kandaghat later, with a follow-up event at Chail Chowk, spearheaded by local advocates, reinforcing the message that a drug-free society needs every citizen’s commitment.

Adding a modern touch, the Samiti introduced the youth to ‘The WHITE Truth’, a web series on addiction launched by the Chief Minister, urging them to engage with its message online.

The day ended on a note of solidarity—a united appeal from HGVS to all sections of society to join hands, build awareness, and protect the future of the youth. It was a reminder that combating addiction requires not just policy, but persistent, compassionate community action.
