Rally of Himalayas 2026: Traffic Curbs, Safety Measures Announced in Lahaul-Spiti

Visitors and local residents travelling through Lahaul-Spiti at the end of September will need to plan their journeys carefully, as several major routes in the district will remain temporarily closed during the 6th Rally of Himalayas 2026.

To ensure smooth traffic management, road safety and environmental protection during the prestigious motorsport event, the district administration has imposed traffic restrictions on key routes between September 27 and 29.

Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana said that necessary directions have been issued under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. During the specified timings, only rally vehicles and emergency service vehicles will be allowed to use the designated routes.

Key Routes to Remain Closed

According to the district administration:

• September 27: The Gramphu Junction-Kaza route will remain closed from 3:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
• September 28: The Kaza Junction-Jispa route will remain closed from 3:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
• September 29: The Darcha Junction-Shinkula route will remain closed from 4:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Authorities have advised commuters and tourists to adjust their travel plans accordingly.

Focus on Environment and Road Safety

Given the fragile ecosystem of the region, the administration has placed special emphasis on environmental conservation during the rally. The use of pressure horns has been completely banned, and participants have been instructed to avoid unnecessary honking, especially near hospitals, schools, government offices and other designated silent zones.

Organisers and support teams have also been directed to keep noise pollution to a minimum throughout the event.

No Off-Road Driving in Forest Areas

To protect the district’s forests and wildlife, rally vehicles will be permitted only on approved roads and designated routes. Off-road driving in forest areas will not be allowed under any circumstances.

Participants have also been instructed not to litter along the rally route or in nearby forest areas. The administration has prohibited the disposal of plastic and other waste materials and clarified that no tents or temporary structures can be set up in forest zones without prior permission from the competent authority.

The district administration has appealed to all participants and support crews to respect the region’s sensitive environment and ensure that wildlife remains undisturbed during the event.

Officials said all concerned departments have been directed to maintain strict safety standards and efficient traffic management so that the rally concludes smoothly while safeguarding the interests of local residents, tourists and the natural heritage of Lahaul-Spiti.
