Debut Film Second Chance by Subhadra Mahajan Set for Indian Premiere at Dharamshala International Film Festival
Subhadra Mahajan’s debut feature film, Second Chance, has already captured hearts across Europe, Asia, and the United States, earning both audience admiration and critical acclaim. Now, this celebrated film is coming to India, with a screening scheduled at the Dharamshala International Film Festival from November 7 to 11.
Hailing from Himachal Pradesh and raised in Shimla, Subhadra Mahajan is a rising filmmaker and the daughter of well-known Rajya Sabha member Harsha Mahajan. Her mother, Uma Mahajan, is a stage actor and social activist, both of whom have greatly influenced her artistic journey.
Describing the theme of Second Chance, Subhadra explains, “The film centers around a young urban woman who, after experiencing a major life setback, retreats to her family’s summer home in the mountains. There, through time, nature, and unexpected friendships, she finds healing.” This introspective journey resonates deeply with the landscapes and ethos of Himachal Pradesh, where the story is set and was filmed.
The scenic Kullu and Lahaul valleys serve as the film’s backdrop, with local talent infusing authenticity into the cast and crew. Debut actors Dheera Johnson, Thakari Devi, and Kanav Thakur—residents of Manali and nearby villages—have brought fresh energy to the screen. The film also features local musician Shuarya, adding a unique Himachali soundscape.
Subhadra shares her excitement, saying, “Second Chance is my heartfelt tribute to my homeland, and to see it premiering in India, especially at Dharamshala, is beyond thrilling.”
The production team boasts a blend of regional and acclaimed industry talents. Produced by Shyam Bora of Metanormal Motion Pictures, the film also brings together co-producers Bhaskar Hazarika, Sidharth Meer, and Naren Chandavarkar. Renowned filmmaker Pan Nalin and cinematographer Swapnil S. Sonawane served as executive producers. Additionally, Subhadra made a point to include several Himachali crew members, like line producer Sanjeev Sakhali and art director Deepak Thakur, ensuring the project resonates with authentic local expertise.
Second Chance first premiered in July at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received rave reviews. The Hollywood Reporter commended its balance of “gentle humor with poignant drama,” while Variety highlighted Subhadra as a pioneering voice among India’s emerging female filmmakers.
Following its European success, Second Chance screened at the Busan International Film Festival, Asia’s largest film market, and will soon make its way to AFI Fest in Los Angeles, bringing this heartfelt narrative of healing and resilience to audiences worldwide.
