Barot’s Trout Revolution: How a Himalayan Gem is Transforming Lives Through Fish Farming
Nestled in the picturesque valleys of Mandi district, the serene village of Barot is making waves—not just with its glistening rivers but also as a thriving hub for trout fish production. Thanks to its cold climate and pristine waters, the Uhl and Lambadag rivers have become ideal grounds for cultivating brown and rainbow trout. With the state government’s active support, this tranquil region is now buzzing with activity, offering new opportunities for locals and attracting tourists and fishermen alike.
A Boost for Farmers and Tourism
The Fisheries Department recently released 35,000 trout seeds—25,000 brown trout and 10,000 rainbow trout—into these rivers, all bred at the Barot trout farm. This initiative isn’t just about fish; it’s about livelihoods. Local youth and tourism professionals are reaping the benefits, as Barot’s breathtaking landscapes already draw nature lovers, many of whom are eager to savor fresh trout. Nearby hotels and eateries are seeing a surge in demand, creating a ripple effect in the local economy.
Training, Grants, and Digital Empowerment
The government isn’t stopping at just stocking rivers—it’s equipping farmers with the tools they need to succeed. Financial aid worth ₹80 lakh has been distributed to 33 farmers for constructing trout raceways, while 25 others received grants of ₹10,000 each for training and equipment. Two progressive trout farmers have even begun exporting rainbow trout eyed ova to Uttarakhand, opening new revenue streams.
To ensure long-term growth, 175 youths have been trained in fisheries, and 362 farmers in Mandi district are now registered on the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP), giving them access to government schemes and a digital identity. Additionally, 48 trout farmers have joined the Prime Minister’s Fisheries Scheme, and 16 have received aid for constructing corp ponds.
A Sustainable Future
Deputy Commissioner Apoorva Devgan emphasized the district’s commitment to boosting trout production, ensuring that schemes are implemented effectively to uplift farmers. With over 1,000 fishing licenses issued in 2024-25, Barot is not just a scenic getaway—it’s a testament to how nature and innovation can come together to create prosperity.
As Barot continues to flourish, it stands as a shining example of how sustainable practices and government support can transform a community, one trout at a time.
