Shimla Fortifies Security as Monsoon Session Nears, Police Deploy Multi-Layered Safety Net
As Himachal Pradesh gears up for the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Assembly, Shimla is witnessing heightened security measures aimed at ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of legislative proceedings. From drone surveillance and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to intelligence monitoring and traffic management, authorities have put in place an extensive security plan across the state capital.
Senior police officials, led by DIG Anjum Ara, have reviewed preparedness at the Assembly complex, where security arrangements are being strengthened well ahead of the session. The Assembly premises have been divided into multiple sectors, with designated officers and personnel assigned specific responsibilities to maintain effective coordination and oversight.
Between 700 and 900 security personnel are expected to be deployed during the session. The force will comprise police officers, constables, Home Guards, QRT members and specialised security units, creating a comprehensive security network around the Assembly and key locations across the city.
An officer of the rank of DIG (South Range) will supervise the overall arrangements, while the Shimla SSP, Additional SP, DSPs and other senior officers will oversee various operational aspects. Quick Response Teams will remain on standby throughout the session, ready to tackle emergencies or any unexpected law-and-order situation at short notice.
Drones and Surveillance to Keep Watch from Above
Technology will play a significant role in this year’s security plan. Police are set to deploy drone cameras to monitor the Assembly complex and surrounding areas from the air. The aerial surveillance will help authorities keep track of crowd movements, gatherings and any suspicious activity in real time.
Alongside drone monitoring, CCTV cameras and other surveillance systems will remain active around the Assembly complex, ensuring round-the-clock vigilance both inside and outside the premises.
Security officials have also made it clear that entry into the Assembly complex will be strictly regulated. Only individuals carrying valid passes will be allowed access, with multiple checkpoints and security personnel stationed at entry points to prevent unauthorised movement.
Focus on Public Safety and Traffic Management
The security plan extends beyond the Assembly building. Intelligence agencies and police teams will closely monitor activity in hotels, homestays and other accommodation facilities across Shimla to identify and address any potential security concerns at an early stage.
With the Assembly session expected to bring increased movement of legislators, officials and visitors, the Traffic Police have also been tasked with managing congestion on major roads and sensitive routes. Personnel will be deployed at strategic locations to ensure smooth traffic flow and facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles when required.
Meanwhile, designated protest sites will remain under close watch. Reserve forces and QRT units will be kept ready to handle large gatherings or any situation that could disrupt public order.
As the Assembly session approaches, Shimla’s security machinery is shifting into high gear, balancing public safety, efficient traffic management and proactive monitoring to ensure the democratic process unfolds smoothly and without disruption.
