
Palampur Farm University Urges Farmers to Act Early Against Fall Armyworm Threat in Maize Crop
As maize cultivation gains momentum across Himachal Pradesh during the kharif season, agricultural experts at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, have advised farmers to stay alert against the Fall Armyworm, a highly destructive pest that can severely affect maize yields if not controlled in time.
Dr. Surjeet Kumar, Head of the Department of Entomology, said regular field monitoring is the most effective way to detect the pest at an early stage and prevent extensive crop damage. Farmers have been urged to inspect their fields frequently for tell-tale signs such as window-pane feeding on young leaves, irregular holes in foliage, and the presence of caterpillars and their droppings inside the maize whorl.
Highlighting the importance of sustainable farming practices, Dr. Kumar recommended the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques rather than relying solely on chemical pesticides. These practices include regular field scouting, removal and destruction of egg masses and larvae, maintaining field cleanliness, conserving beneficial insects, and installing pheromone traps to monitor pest activity.
The university emphasized that indiscriminate use of pesticides should be avoided, as it can harm beneficial insects and lead to environmental concerns. Instead, farmers should follow scientific pest management practices and seek guidance from agricultural experts, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), or the university whenever signs of infestation are detected.
According to the advisory, insecticides should be applied only when Fall Armyworm damage exceeds 10 per cent of the crop or when the pest population reaches the Economic Threshold Level (ETL). Under such conditions, farmers may use recommended insecticides such as Emamectin Benzoate 5 SG at 0.4 grams per litre of water or Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC at 0.4 millilitres per litre of water.
Experts have also advised farmers to ensure thorough spraying within the maize whorl, where the pest typically hides and feeds. Following the prescribed dosage and safety guidelines is essential for effective control and to avoid unnecessary chemical exposure.
The university believes that timely surveillance, early intervention, and a balanced pest management approach can significantly reduce crop losses and help farmers protect their maize harvest while promoting environmentally responsible agriculture.
