From Village Tracks to National Glory: Kusum Thakur’s Inspiring Gold Medal Journey
In a story that inspires both pride and perseverance, 23-year-old Kusum Thakur from the small village of Baila near Pandoh in Mandi district has made Himachal Pradesh proud by achieving a remarkable milestone on the national stage.
Kusum scripted history by winning the gold medal in the 200-meter race at the 29th National Senior Federation Athletics Championship, held in Ranchi from May 22 to 25. Competing against some of the country’s top athletes, she delivered an outstanding performance, completing the race in an impressive 23.94 seconds—marking the state’s first-ever national gold in a short sprint event.
What makes Kusum’s achievement even more extraordinary is the adversity she overcame along the way. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she developed a serious respiratory condition, forcing her to step away from the sport she loved. Medical experts even advised her to give up running altogether. But Kusum refused to let go of her dream. With determination and resilience, she fought her way back to fitness, returned to the track, and ultimately reached the pinnacle of success.
Her journey began at a very young age, running alongside her elder brother when she was just four years old. Over the years, that early passion transformed into dedication, discipline, and now, national glory.
Kusum Thakur’s story is not just about winning a medal—it is about courage, persistence, and the belief that no obstacle is too great when you are determined to succeed.
