Focus on People and Priorities: CM Sukhu Pushes for Faster Relief and Stronger Accountability

In a late evening review meeting, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu laid out a clear message to his administration—prioritise people’s concerns, act faster, and ensure accountability across departments.

One of the key issues he raised was the long-pending dues of Class-IV pensioners. Stressing dignity and timely support for those who have served the government, he directed departments to speed up payments of gratuity and leave encashment, in line with his earlier budget announcement. For many retired employees, this step could bring much-needed financial relief.

The Chief Minister also turned attention to families waiting for jobs on compassionate grounds. He asked officials to compile complete details of all such applicants so that the government can take informed and fair decisions, offering hope to many who depend on these opportunities.

Taking a strong stand against drug abuse, Sukhu sought updates on action taken against government employees found involved in chitta (heroin) trafficking. Calling the fight against drugs a “mass movement,” he reiterated that protecting the youth remains a top priority. In a significant step, he directed that dope testing be made mandatory before anyone joins government service—a move aimed at reinforcing accountability and setting strict standards.

Employment generation was another major focus. The Chief Minister asked for a detailed report on vacant posts across departments to ensure timely recruitment. He also confirmed that 500 posts of Junior Office Assistant (IT) will soon be filled, opening up fresh opportunities for young aspirants.

Alongside governance issues, Sukhu also highlighted the impact of recent storms, which uprooted several trees across forest areas. He instructed officials to quickly assess the situation and remove fallen trees within set timelines, noting that delays lead to losses for the state. A special campaign to address this will begin from June 1.

The meeting, attended by senior officials including the Chief Secretary and Administrative Secretaries, reflected a broader push by the government—to respond swiftly to challenges, support citizens where it matters most, and ensure smoother functioning across departments.
