Fresh Snowfall Brings Chill Back to Himachal, Atal Tunnel Closed as Weather Turns Rough

Himachal Pradesh is once again feeling a winter-like chill as an active western disturbance continues to influence the state’s weather. Over the past 24 hours, snowfall has persisted on higher mountain peaks, while intermittent rainfall has been reported in the lower and plain areas, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures across regions.

Districts such as Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and parts of Kullu have been experiencing fresh snowfall since yesterday in their higher reaches. At the same time, lighter rain spells have continued in other parts of the state, adding to the cool and damp conditions.

While the rain and snowfall have brought welcome relief from rising temperatures, they have also disrupted daily life in the hill regions. As a precautionary step, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has closed vehicular movement through the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, citing heavy snowfall and unfavourable weather forecasts. In several tribal and interior areas, roads have been blocked due to snow and rain, and authorities are working to restore connectivity wherever possible.

After a prolonged dry spell, the current spell of rain and snowfall is being seen as beneficial for agriculture. The moisture is expected to support crops and orchards, while continuous rainfall may also help ease water scarcity concerns during the approaching summer months.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours, warning of further snowfall in higher elevations and rain accompanied by hailstorms in lower regions. Residents and travellers have been advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel in snowbound areas and follow advisories issued by local authorities.

As weather conditions continue to evolve, officials are keeping a close watch on the situation to ensure safety and timely restoration of essential services across the state.
