Vacant teacher posts affect studies at Peeran School
Five posts, including the Principal, have been vacant at the Government Senior Secondary School since last year. The two vacant positions, particularly for the TGT Arts, are impacting student learning, while other teachers are already overloaded. Similarly, two clerical positions have been vacant for years. Only one, that of Superintendent Grade 2, is filled, who shouldered the burden of the school’s clerical staff. It’s worth noting that the government upgraded this school’s status to Class 10+2 in 2007, but in the nearly 19 years since, no student from this school has achieved a distinction in sports or other activities, beyond board merit. Most importantly, no youth from Peeran Panchayat has held a high-ranking position in any state department since 1990. Due to the proximity of the degree college, most students stay home after completing their 12th grade.
According to locals, this school has consistently faced a shortage of teachers, which has hampered children’s education. To date, no student has progressed in any field, and the number of students is declining yearly instead of increasing, which is a matter of concern. The government opened a computer lab in this school to provide IT education, but due to the lack of IT teachers, the computers have been gathering dust in the room for years. Due to the lack of commerce and science subjects in this school, students have to travel to Solan or Junga. Locals say that the Sukhu government has closed many schools in the state, and two of the surplus teachers from these schools should be deployed to this school to ensure children’s education is not affected.
Deputy Director Higher Education Shimla Lekhraj said that the post of Principal is going to be filled soon while correspondence has been made with the higher officials of the department regarding filling of other posts.
