India’s Census Goes Digital: 2027 to Mark a New Era in Data Collection
In a significant leap toward modern governance, India’s upcoming Census-2027 will be the country’s first fully digital enumeration exercise. This was announced by Deep Shikha Sharma, Director Census Working Director, during the inauguration of a training workshop for officers and staff of district Shimla, held at Bachat Bhawan on Sunday.
The workshop, organized in two batches from March 1 to March 3 and March 5 to March 7, 2026, aims to prepare officials for the ambitious transition. Sharma emphasized that data collection will now be conducted through a mobile app and web portal, ensuring a process that is not only quicker but also more transparent and efficient. “This is a landmark moment for India’s census,” she said, urging officers to complete their responsibilities with dedication and within the stipulated deadlines.
India conducts its census every ten years. The census due in 2021 had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making the 2027 exercise the first since 2011. It will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase, known as the House Listing Operations (HLO), is scheduled to take place in Himachal Pradesh from May 12 to June 11, 2026. The second phase is proposed for February 2027, with completion expected by September 2026 in areas already covered.
For the first time, citizens will also have the option to participate through a self-enumeration facility. The portal will go live 15 days before the scheduled date, allowing individuals to log in and register their details independently. Upon registration, they will receive a self-counting ID, which will later be verified by field officials. Enumerators and supervisors on the ground will carry out their tasks using a dedicated mobile app, streamlining the entire process.
Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap highlighted the deeper significance of the census, calling it more than just a headcount. “The census is the foundation stone of nation-building. It is a reflection of administrative credibility and governance transparency,” he said. He urged every employee and officer involved to uphold the highest standards of integrity and assured them of full administrative support.
India’s census is recognized as the world’s largest administrative exercise and the most comprehensive source of statistical data on the country’s diverse population. The 2027 census will be the 16th in the series that began in 1872, and the eighth since India’s independence. With the integration of digital tools like the self-count portal, mobile app, and the Census Management and Monitoring System, the upcoming exercise promises to set a new benchmark in how the nation counts itself.
