Tradition Meets Trade: Rampur Bushahr Gears Up for the International Lavi Fair and Horse Show

Every November, the quiet town of Rampur Bushahr in Himachal Pradesh bursts into life as it hosts the centuries-old International Lavi Fair—a vibrant celebration of culture, commerce, and community that dates back to the 17th century. Born out of a historic trade treaty between the rulers of Bushahr and Tibet, the fair has become a symbol of enduring ties and timeless traditions.

From Wool to Warmth: The Origins of Lavi

The name “Lavi” is believed to have evolved from the Tibetan word “Lowi,” meaning “to cut wool.” True to its roots, the fair has long been a hub for trading wool and woolen garments, drawing merchants and artisans from across the region. But it’s not just textiles that change hands—livestock, especially horses, are a major attraction.

Spotlight on Chamurthi Horses: The Pride of the Cold Desert

Among the stars of the fair are the majestic Chamurthi horses, often called the “Ship of the Cold Desert.” Native to the Tibetan plateau, these hardy animals are prized for their ability to navigate high-altitude terrain with ease and withstand freezing temperatures. Their breeding grounds—Pin Valley in Lahaul-Spiti and Bhaba Valley in Kinnaur—are as rugged as the horses themselves.

To celebrate and promote these remarkable animals, the Himachal Pradesh Department of Animal Husbandry, in collaboration with the Shimla District Administration, organizes a dedicated Horse Mandi and Horse Show just before the fair kicks off.

What’s Happening This Year?

This year’s Horse Mandi and Show will run from November 1 to 3, 2025, in Rampur Bushahr. Here’s what attendees can look forward to:

  • November 1: Horse registration begins
  • November 2: An awareness camp and Kisan Goshthi for horse rearers
  • November 3: The grand finale featuring a horse race, balloon burst competition, and awards for the best horses, presented by the Chief Guest

More Than a Fair—It’s an Economic Lifeline

Beyond the festivities, the horse show plays a vital role in supporting the local economy. It helps preserve the Chamurthi breed and connects sellers with buyers from Himachal Pradesh and neighboring Uttarakhand, especially from Uttarkashi district.

As Rampur Bushahr prepares to welcome traders, tourists, and horse enthusiasts, the Lavi Fair continues to stand as a living testament to the region’s rich heritage and resilient spirit.
