Grief and Accusations Follow 72-Year-Old Woman’s Death at IGMC, Shimla
A 72-year-old woman, Sev Dasi, died early Friday morning at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla, prompting her grieving family to accuse the hospital of negligence. While hospital authorities insist all protocols were followed, the family’s emotional allegations have brought renewed scrutiny to patient care at one of Himachal Pradesh’s top medical institutions.
Sev Dasi, who was suffering from blood cancer, cardiac complications, and inflammation in her liver and spleen, had been referred to IGMC from Nerchowk Medical College. According to IGMC’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Rahul Rau, she arrived at the emergency department at 5:33 a.m., was immediately assessed, and began receiving treatment. She had reportedly been treated for a heart attack before being transferred.
Despite efforts by the medical team, her condition worsened. She was moved to the Coronary Care Unit, where she passed away at 7:51 a.m. Doctors cited a heart attack and complications from blood cancer as the cause of death.
However, her son, Liladhar Chauhan, took to Facebook Live shortly after her passing, visibly distraught and accusing medical staff of failing to act in time. He claimed that his mother received proper attention only after he began livestreaming from the hospital—a claim that has stirred public concern.
IGMC officials have acknowledged receiving a formal complaint and said the matter is under investigation. They have promised a full statement after reviewing the circumstances in detail.
As the family mourns their loss and awaits answers, the incident adds to a growing list of cases raising questions about how critical patients are handled in emergency care settings, even at the state’s most advanced hospitals.
