Monsoon Misery: Himachal Grapples with Rising Waterborne Illnesses
As monsoon rains drench Himachal Pradesh, a troubling wave of waterborne diseases—jaundice and diarrhoea—is sweeping through the state. Health officials are on high alert, issuing urgent advisories as hospitals report a steady influx of cases.
Hospitals Overwhelmed as Cases Surge
District hospitals are seeing 10 to 15 new cases daily, with even more patients arriving at medical colleges. The Health Department has instructed hospitals to stock up on essential medicines and stay vigilant. Experts warn that diarrhoea can persist even after jaundice subsides, urging people to remain cautious during recovery.
Contaminated Water Blamed for Outbreak
Health Secretary M. Sudha links the spike in illnesses to monsoon-related water contamination. “Heavy rains have compromised water sources, leading to more infections,” she explained. “We’ve alerted all health facilities and are urging the public to take precautions.”
Government Steps In: Water Testing & Warnings
Authorities have ordered the Jal Shakti Department to conduct statewide water quality checks. In areas where water is unsafe, officials must put up warning signs to prevent consumption.
How to Stay Safe
With the monsoon far from over, residents are advised to:
✔ Boil drinking water before use
✔ Avoid street food to reduce infection risks
✔ Maintain strict hygiene to curb the spread
As Himachal battles this health crisis, awareness and preventive measures could make all the difference. Stay safe, stay informed!
