Gucchi Mushrooms: Nature’s Priceless Treasure

After the rains in the high-altitude areas of Mashobra block, villagers eagerly venture into the forest to collect Gucchi mushrooms. They pack their lunches and spend the entire day in the forest, returning home in the evening. Gucchi, scientifically known as Marcilla esculenta, is a rare and valuable gift from nature, growing spontaneously with the touch of lightning and thunder. This mushroom is one of the most expensive vegetables globally, fetching prices of ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per kilogram in the open market.

Gucchi mushrooms have been a source of income for locals for generations. They thrive in the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, known locally as Chenu, Rontu, Chhatri, Chatmor, and Dungroo. The ideal growth period for Gucchi is from March to May, and they flourish without the need for fertilizers or seeds. Agricultural experts note that Gucchi mushrooms are found at elevations between 1500 to 3500 meters above sea level, requiring temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees Celsius.

Durga Singh Thakur from Junga explains that Gucchi mushrooms grow abundantly in scorched forests, where moisture and grass are present. However, spotting these mushrooms is a matter of luck, as not everyone can find them. Once collected, Gucchi mushrooms are dried at home, significantly reducing their weight.

Despite their natural growth and mysterious origins, Gucchi mushrooms remain a puzzle for scientists. They grow without seeds or specific cultivation methods, making them a unique natural phenomenon. Ayurveda experts praise Gucchi mushrooms for their miraculous medicinal properties, rich in iron, vitamins B and C, amino acids, and minerals. Truly, Gucchi mushrooms are a priceless treasure bestowed by nature.
