Khelo Himachal – A Drug-Free Future Through Sports

Youth are the heartbeat of Himachal’s progress, and under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state government is rolling out bold initiatives to protect them from the menace of drugs while empowering them through sports and education.

To steer young people away from substance abuse, the government has prepared a comprehensive plan called “Khelo Himachal – Chitta Mukt Abhiyan”, set to launch in 2026–27. With an estimated budget of ₹12 crore, sports competitions in volleyball, kabaddi, and cricket will be held at block, district, and state levels, engaging nearly 50,000 youth aged 15–30. The campaign aims to instill discipline, healthy competition, and a positive lifestyle.

For those already trapped in addiction, the government is adopting a compassionate approach. De-addiction and rehabilitation centers are being expanded across the state, including a modern facility under construction at Kotla Barog, Sirmaur, worth ₹20 crore, equipped with a library, gym, sports activities, and vocational training. An observation home and special home are also being set up nearby to support children involved in drug-related cases.

The anti-drug movement has grown into a mass campaign, with events like the Anti-Chitta Walkathon drawing enthusiastic public participation. To strengthen enforcement, 1,000 new constables will be recruited, and strict action is being taken against drug mafias and illegally acquired properties. In 2025 alone, assets worth ₹23.93 crore were seized, and disciplinary action was taken against police personnel and government employees involved in trafficking.

From education to healthcare, from sports to law enforcement, the government’s multi-pronged strategy reflects a clear vision: to build a drug-free, empowered Himachal, preserving the sanctity of this Devbhoomi and ensuring a brighter future for its youth.
