Workers Unite in Shimla on Labour Day: Nationwide Strike on May 20
Shimla echoed with the voices of hundreds of determined workers as CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) organized a powerful gathering at Kalibari Hall to mark International Workers’ Day. The event, led by prominent labor leaders like Vijendra Mehra, Jagat Ram, and Jagmohan Thakur, saw fiery speeches, tributes to workers’ rights martyrs, and a bold call to action against the Modi government’s anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-people policies.
A Day of Resolve and Resistance
The hall buzzed with energy as workers from different sectors—ASHA, Anganwadi, construction, MNREGA, and public sector employees—raised their voices against injustice. The speakers didn’t mince words:
“The Modi government is pushing workers into modern-day slavery with its anti-labor codes. If they don’t roll back these policies, they’ll face the wrath of millions on the streets!” warned Vijendra Mehra, CITU’s state president.
Key Demands: What Workers Are Fighting For
The rally wasn’t just about protests—it was about real solutions. Workers unanimously passed resolutions demanding:
✔ ₹26,000 minimum wage and pension for all
✔ Scrapping the four anti-worker labor codes
✔ No to 12-hour workdays—bring back 8-hour shifts!
✔ End privatization of PSUs, railways, and electricity
✔ Regularize contract workers—equal pay for equal work
✔ Old Pension Scheme (OPS) restoration for government staff
✔ 200 days of work under MNREGA at ₹600/day, extended to cities
✔ MSP for farmers as per Swaminathan Commission
Why May 20? The Strike That Could Shake the Govt
The rally concluded with a historic decision—a nationwide strike on May 20. Workers across India will down tools, from factories to farms, sending a clear message: “Enough is enough!”
“This isn’t just about wages—it’s about dignity,” said Jagmohan Thakur, a pensioners’ leader. “If the government won’t listen, we’ll make them hear us on the streets!”
What’s Next?
With 10 major trade unions and dozens of federations joining forces, the May 20 strike is set to be one of the biggest workers’ movements in recent years. As inflation bites and jobs vanish, the anger is palpable.
“They’re selling our nation to corporates while we struggle for basics,” said Surjeet Kumar, a construction worker. “On May 20, we fight back!”
