We Need Help Now: Himachal Pleads for National Disaster Status Amid Widespread Devastation
Himachal Pradesh is facing one of its toughest times in recent memory. Torrential rains have wreaked havoc across the state, leaving behind a trail of destruction in districts like Kullu, Chamba, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti. Homes, roads, and lives have been upended, and the state government is now urgently appealing to the Centre for support.
Industries Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan announced that the Himachal Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to declare the situation a national disaster. If needed, the state is ready to take an all-party delegation, including BJP leaders, to meet the Union Home Minister and push for immediate assistance.
“The State Needs a Financial Lifeline”
Chauhan stressed the urgency of the situation:
“We need a financial package from the Centre as soon as possible. The damage is massive, and we’re grateful to all parties for standing together in this crisis.”
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is personally visiting disaster-hit areas in Chamba, while Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi is working on the ground to reopen blocked roads and coordinate rescue efforts. The government has activated the Disaster Management Act, but the focus remains on evacuating stranded people and restoring basic connectivity.
Infrastructure Crippled, Relief Efforts Underway
Many roads in Chamba have been completely destroyed, and temporary routes are being opened to reach affected communities. The scale of damage is overwhelming, and rebuilding will take time and resources the state currently lacks.
In 2023 alone, Himachal suffered losses of ₹10,000 crore, but received only ₹2,000 crore in aid from the Centre. With limited funds, the state government is doing its best to carry out relief and rescue operations, moving people to safer locations and providing emergency support.
