Shimla’s Iconic Ice Skating Rink to Become All-Weather Indoor Facility
Shimla’s legendary ice skating rink is set for a major transformation as work begins to convert it into an all-weather indoor facility. This ambitious project, with a budget of ₹35 crore, is being undertaken by the Tourism Department with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
A Rink That Meets Global Standards
The revamped rink will meet international standards, featuring a 60-foot-long and 30-foot-wide surface, ideal for professional skating competitions. Modern amenities such as changing rooms, spectator seating, and a cafeteria will enhance the facility, ensuring a comfortable experience for skaters and visitors alike.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Year-Round Use
A state-of-the-art refrigeration system will maintain the ice surface throughout the year. This advanced setup includes brine pipes beneath the rink, which circulate a cold antifreeze solution to keep the ice frozen. High-quality insulation layers will ensure energy efficiency by preventing heat transfer from the ground.
From Historic Landmark to Global Attraction
Originally envisioned under the Smart City Mission, the project has now been aligned with ADB funding to focus on infrastructural and technological advancements. Construction is expected to begin by mid-next year, with the upgraded rink poised to become a hub for professional competitions and tourism.
Boosting Tourism and Winter Sports
The all-weather facility is expected to attract both tourists and professional skaters, strengthening Shimla’s position as a premier winter sports destination. It will also contribute to the state’s revenue by ensuring year-round usability of the iconic rink.
This modernization effort not only preserves Shimla’s historic ice skating rink but also elevates it to global standards, offering a world-class experience for winter sports enthusiasts and visitors.
