Shimla to Get 24/7 Water Supply with New Storage Tanks and Smart Pipelines

The residents of Shimla are set to benefit from round-the-clock access to clean drinking water, thanks to a groundbreaking project led by France’s Suez Company. The first phase of this ambitious initiative, which involved detailed drone and door-to-door surveys, has been successfully completed, paving the way for a modernized water supply system.

Drone Technology Revolutionizes Water Management

For the first time, Shimla has utilized drone technology to design its water distribution plan. The survey mapped key areas across the city, identifying ideal locations for water storage tanks and evaluating the need for new pipelines. This innovative approach is expected to inspire similar initiatives in other regions.

Engaging Residents Through NGOs

In addition to the drone survey, the project also included a door-to-door survey to gauge residents’ water needs. The next step involves working with NGOs to inform residents about the project’s benefits and gather their feedback. These insights will guide the installation of pipelines and storage tanks.

Project Highlights

Construction of 40 Water Storage Tanks: In the next phase, 40 tanks will be built to ensure consistent water pressure and equal distribution, even in buildings up to 17 meters tall.

Upgraded Pipelines: Old, deteriorated pipelines will be replaced to minimize water wastage.

Smart Meters for Better Water Management

• The project will also introduce smart meters, designed to modernize the water supply system. These meters will:
• Provide real-time water usage data to consumers.
• Enable automated billing without human intervention.
• Allow users to set daily usage limits.
• Additionally, existing water meters will be replaced at no cost to residents.

Pressurized Water Supply for Hilly Areas

Shimla’s unique topography has been factored into the design, with a pressurized water distribution system ensuring equal water supply even in elevated regions.

The Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJNPL) is overseeing the project, while Suez Company is responsible for execution. With extensive experience managing water systems in major Indian cities, Suez is enthusiastic about bringing this transformative project to Shimla.
