Shimla Introduces Paid Garbage Pickup to Curb Illegal Dumping and Keep City Clean

In a bid to tackle illegal waste disposal and maintain cleanliness, the Municipal Corporation of Shimla has launched a paid garbage pickup service. This initiative aims to manage the additional waste generated during weddings, parties, and home renovations, ensuring responsible disposal instead of dumping in unauthorized areas.

Under the scheme, residents can request doorstep waste collection by paying a fixed fee. The charges are set at ₹600 for a small pickup, ₹1,300 for a tipper, and ₹2,100 for a larger garbage vehicle if the waste volume exceeds the standard capacity. Additionally, the corporation is offering a specialized service for collecting construction and demolition (C&D) debris, which is often illegally dumped in nearby forests, causing environmental damage.

Municipal Commissioner Bhupendra Atri emphasized that the initiative will make waste disposal more convenient for residents while keeping the city clean. “People can now get garbage collected from their homes by paying a nominal fee, ensuring that waste reaches the processing plant instead of being dumped in unauthorized locations,” he stated.

By providing a structured waste management solution, the administration not only aims to curb illegal dumping but also generate revenue to enhance municipal services.
