Say No to Drugs: Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti’s Appeal on Maha Shivaratri
On the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti has urged people to stay away from intoxicating substances. The committee emphasized that cultural festivals like Shivaratri should not be associated with substances such as bhang, datura, or any intoxicating concoctions. To spread awareness, committee members distributed pamphlets in the Sanjauli area under the leadership of district secretary Sumitra Chandel.
The recent rise in drug-related deaths among youth in Sanjauli and other parts of the state has raised serious concerns. District president Gyanand Sharma expressed deep sorrow over families who, instead of celebrating Shivaratri, are mourning the loss of their loved ones due to drug abuse. He highlighted that Shivaratri holds a special place in the hills, with traditional practices like sending special dishes to daughters symbolizing love and connection. However, the growing menace of addiction is shattering these bonds by taking away brothers, sons, husbands, and fathers from their families.
To combat drug abuse, the committee has pledged to continue its awareness campaign, particularly targeting women so they can guide their children away from addiction. As part of this initiative, they are launching a special campaign called “Maa.” Additionally, on March 8, International Women’s Day, the committee will organize a state-wide movement against drug abuse. In Shimla, a rally will be held, urging action from drug vendors, traders, and the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment to curb the rising threat of substance abuse.
