Safety First: Tourists Rescued in Jakhu Ropeway Mock Drill

Shimla’s iconic Jakhu ropeway turned into the stage for a dramatic rescue drill on Thursday, as tourists were safely “rescued” from a trolley suspended nearly 100 metres above the ground. The exercise, organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), tested how prepared emergency teams are to handle real‑life ropeway mishaps.

In a carefully controlled operation, personnel from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), and Home Guards lowered stranded passengers using ropes, showcasing how coordinated teamwork can save lives in critical situations.

Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Jyoti Rana explained that such drills are carried out regularly at the Jakhu ropeway. “The mock drill was conducted to practise the safe rescue of people, in the event they get trapped in the ropeway. Such exercises are crucial for effectively dealing with any emergency,” she said.

The drill not only reassured tourists but also highlighted the importance of preparedness in a city where ropeways are a popular attraction.
