Remembering Virbhadra Singh: A Legacy That Still Lives in Himachal’s Heart
Leaders of the Himachal Pradesh Congress gathered at Rajiv Bhawan today to mark the birth anniversary of the late Virbhadra Singh, a towering figure in the state’s political history. The occasion was solemn yet respectful, as party members paid floral tributes to his portrait and reflected on his immense contribution to the development of Himachal Pradesh.
State Congress President Vinay Kumar led the tributes, describing Virbhadra Singh as one of the key architects of modern Himachal. He said that his legacy goes far beyond his years in office, as he was a leader who truly connected with people and earned their trust and affection. According to Kumar, Virbhadra Singh’s personality and leadership left a lasting impression, making him a leader who “ruled the hearts of the people.”
Reflecting on his long and distinguished political career, Vinay Kumar highlighted that Virbhadra Singh served the nation and the state for nearly 65 years. During this time, he held important positions, including Union Minister and Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for six terms. Known for his approachable nature and warmth, he commanded immense respect from people across all sections of society.
Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan also spoke on the occasion, recalling Virbhadra Singh as a compassionate and sensitive leader. He noted that the late leader was always attentive to the problems faced by ordinary citizens. “No one who approached him with a complaint ever returned empty-handed,” Chauhan said, emphasizing how deeply connected Virbhadra Singh was to the people he served. He added that the state would always remember his commitment and service.
The tribute ceremony saw the presence of several prominent Congress leaders and local representatives, including Organization General Secretary Vinod Zinta, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, Mahila Congress Working President Tripta Thakur, and Shimla District Congress Urban President Indrajit Singh. Senior party members like Yashpal Tanai, Sonia Chauhan, Ravi Sharma, Jeevan Kumar, Vineet Gautam and Anand Kaushal also attended the gathering.
In addition, councillors of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, former Mayor Jaini Prem, and leaders such as Harjeet Kumar Manga, Malkit Singh, Narendra Kanwar, B.S. Chauhan, Jeet Ram Panwar, Hemraj Sharma, Meena Viz and Krishna Kumari joined in offering their respects. Officials and workers from various organisations and departments also paid tribute, reflecting the wide-reaching impact Virbhadra Singh had across political and administrative circles.
