Orange alert in Himachal: Heavy rain, snowfall, avalanches and cold wave expected
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rain and snowfall in the state due to a fresh Western Disturbance. This alert will be in effect for the next 48 hours, with a high likelihood of intense rain and snowfall, particularly in the higher regions. The department has also warned of increased avalanche risks in high-altitude areas.
Weather Forecast and Warnings:
- Chamba and Kangra Districts: Expected to receive rainfall on Monday.
- Remaining 10 Districts: A yellow alert has been issued.
- Public Advisory: Residents are advised to avoid areas with fresh snowfall and exercise caution due to avalanche risks. Drivers should avoid traveling during early morning and late-night hours when temperatures are lowest, increasing the chances of icy roads and reduced visibility.
Temperature Drop and Cold Wave:
- Night Temperatures: Expected to drop by 3-5 degrees Celsius.
- Daytime Temperatures: Likely to decrease by around 2 degrees Celsius.
- Cold Wave Conditions: Anticipated in the plains, with the higher reaches experiencing the season’s coldest days.
Impact on Essential Services:
- The deteriorating weather could affect essential services and disrupt outdoor commercial activities.
- Departments such as the Public Works Department, Electricity Board, and Water Power Department are on alert, with PWD teams already deployed in sensitive areas to handle emergencies.
Avalanche Incidents in Lahaul-Spiti:
- Muling: An avalanche blocked the flow of the Chandra River.
- Gayu: An iceberg broke off near the ITBP border post, sending a snowstorm towards the camp. Fortunately, it stopped 200 meters from the post, avoiding a major tragedy. ITBP officers and jawans were clearing snow from the area and managed to escape safely.
