For many tourists arriving in Shimla, figuring out taxi fares can sometimes be as challenging as navigating the hill town’s winding roads. To make travel smoother and more transparent, the police department has introduced a pre-paid taxi service at ISBT Tutikandi, allowing passengers to book taxis at fixed government-approved rates before starting their journey.
The system, launched in March 2026, aims to eliminate fare disputes and provide visitors and local commuters with clarity about taxi charges. Instead of negotiating with drivers, passengers can simply visit the designated counter at the bus terminal, pay the prescribed fare, and receive a slip confirming their booking.
A Simple and Transparent Process
Using the service is straightforward. Travelers need to inform the counter staff about their destination and pay the fixed fare in advance. They are then issued a payment slip, which is handed to the assigned taxi driver before the journey begins.
Once the trip is completed, the driver returns the slip to the pre-paid counter as part of the official process. Because the fare is settled beforehand, passengers don’t have to worry about unexpected charges or disagreements at the end of the ride.

The pre-paid taxi network currently includes around 115 vehicles and serves 26 key destinations across Shimla, along with routes to Chandigarh and Chandigarh International Airport.

- Kamna Devi Temple
- Summer Hill
- Kufri
- Chharabra
- Fagu
- Naldehra
The service also caters to local destinations such as Sanjauli, IGMC, Tutu, Chakkar, and other important areas within the city.
