Nehru Book Sparks Political Row Ahead of Himachal Assembly Session
Just a day before the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s winter session, a new book titled “The Visionary” has stirred sharp exchanges between the government and opposition. The book, authored by Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Chairperson of the Himachal Pradesh School Education Board, explores the political philosophy and nation-building ideas of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Controversy Over Timing and Distribution
Critics have questioned the timing of the release and its distribution through the state’s academic machinery. Responding to objections, Dr. Sharma defended the publication, urging leaders to look beyond partisan politics.
“Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of the country, not of any particular party,” he said, stressing that the book aims to reintroduce students to Nehru’s intellectual legacy.
Call for Dialogue
In a rare outreach, Dr. Sharma invited opposition MLAs to visit the Board headquarters in Dharamshala for an open discussion.
“Come, sit with me and understand the book. Let’s promote Nehru’s ideas together,” he said, even offering to include a message from the Union Education Minister if suggested.
Reading as a Positive Alternative
Dr. Sharma clarified that the book was released with permission from the Jawaharlal Nehru Foundation and priced at ₹50 to encourage student readership. He linked the initiative to broader efforts against Chitta abuse and mobile addiction, arguing that meaningful literature can provide constructive engagement for youth.
Shared Responsibility
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Sharma emphasized cooperation over confrontation:
“Promoting the ideals of eminent national leaders should be treated as a shared responsibility. Let us work together to provide something positive to the young generation.”
