Monsoon Magic Returns Early to Himachal : A Blessing for Farmers and Nature Lovers
The rhythmic sound of raindrops has once again graced Himachal Pradesh, as the southwest monsoon made an early entrance this year. On Friday, June 20, the monsoon reached parts of the state including Shimla, bringing with it a wave of cool relief and lush greenery. Light to moderate showers have been sweeping across various regions, following days of pre-monsoon drizzle that hinted at its arrival.
This year, the monsoon has arrived seven days earlier than in 2024, a welcome change for farmers and horticulturists who rely on timely rains. Last year, the rains came on June 27, but this time, nature seems to be ahead of schedule.
The Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy rainfall across the state until June 26. Residents are advised to stay cautious, especially during intense downpours expected on June 22, 23, 25, and 26.
“The monsoon has reached Shimla and nearby areas. Rainfall is expected across most regions in the coming days, with some places likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers,”

A Look Back: Monsoon Trends Over the Years
Over the past decade, Himachal has seen varied monsoon arrival dates:
- Earliest: June 13 (2021)
- Latest: July 2 (2019)
- Most years fall between June 21 and June 29.
Rainfall Patterns: Mostly Below Average
In the last 10 years, only two monsoon seasons brought above-average rainfall:
- 2018: 927 mm (21.4% above normal)
- 2023: 886 mm (21% above normal)
The rest of the years saw less than normal rainfall, with 2020 being the driest at 567.4 mm — 25.7% below average.
As the monsoon settles in, it brings not just water but hope — for farmers, for forests, and for everyone who finds joy in the rain-soaked beauty of the hills.
