Mandi Shivratri Festival Embraces New Cultural Spirit
The historic International Shivratri Festival in Mandi is stepping into 2026 with a vibrant new dimension. For the first time, the organizing committee has introduced pre-festival cultural programs, turning the week leading up to the grand celebration into a showcase of music, dance, and literature.
From February 10 to 14, and again on February 17, Sankan Garden—the heart of Mandi town—will host evenings filled with classical melodies, Kathak performances, bhajans, plays, and literary gatherings. The festivities began with a lamp-lighting ceremony by DC Mandi Apoorva Devgan, followed by soulful renditions from celebrated artists like Sukla Sharma, sarod maestro Deepak Gautam, and Himachal’s pioneering male Kathak dancer Dinesh Gupta.
The atmosphere came alive with performances from local academies, blending tradition with modern artistry under colorful lights. Beyond music and dance, the festival will feature a Bhajan Sandhya on February 11, theatrical plays on February 12 and 13, and a Kavi Sammelan on February 17. A highlight is the Mandi Literature Festival on February 14, where renowned writers, including Shimla’s Raja Bhasin, will gather beneath the iconic clock tower.
Adding to the cultural richness, a heritage walk will allow visitors to explore Mandi’s 500-year-old legacy. With these new features, the Shivratri Festival is evolving into not just a religious celebration, but a holistic cultural experience that connects people to the soul of Mandi.
