Manali–Leh Highway Reopens Briefly for Winter Travel

Travelers heading to the high Himalayas have a short reprieve this winter. The Lahaul–Spiti district administration has announced that vehicles can now move along the Manali–Leh National Highway (NH‑3) up to the Zingzing Bar–Sarchu stretch, but only until December 7.

The decision, taken after a multi‑agency review led by Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, comes as a relief for locals and adventurers who had seen the route shut down on November 20 due to sudden snow and safety concerns.

What’s Allowed

  • Traffic window: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, no exceptions
  • Route: Zingzing Bar to Sarchu
  • Oversight: Police teams will regulate vehicles in real time

Safety First

Authorities are urging motorists to carry winter supplies and remain vigilant. Motorcyclists, in particular, have been warned about thin, nearly invisible ice sheets that can make bends and descents treacherous.

Still a Risky Season

Officials stress that this is only a temporary relaxation. Weather in the region remains unpredictable, and any extension beyond December 7 will depend on fresh safety assessments.

To enforce the guidelines, DC Bhadana has invoked provisions of the Disaster Management Act, ensuring strict compliance with the advisory.
