Locals Speak Out as NHAI Reviews Impact of Kalka-Shimla Highway Project
On Tuesday, a team from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) visited several villages in Shimla and Solan districts to assess the damage caused by the ongoing Kalka-Shimla four-lane construction project. The visit gave residents a chance to voice their concerns directly to officials, with Dr. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, President of the Himachal Kisan Sabha, leading the discussions. Hiranand Shandil, former Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Kot, also joined the dialogue.
Villagers from Anandpur and Shoghi (Shimla) and Basha (Solan) shared their grievances, particularly about the way the construction work has been carried out. Many claimed that the company responsible—contracted by NHAI—has not followed proper engineering standards. Roads were reportedly cut at steep angles of 80 to 90 degrees instead of the recommended 70 degrees, leading to land damage and safety risks. Several affected families also said they have not received any compensation.
Concerns were raised about the lack of regular meetings by the committee headed by the District Commissioner, which residents say has led to uncoordinated and arbitrary construction decisions. Locals believe that not just the contractor, but also NHAI and the state government, share responsibility for the disruption.
Among the demands put forward were:
- Upgrading local three-link roads to four-lane highways
- Full compensation for those whose homes and lands are at risk
The NHAI team is scheduled to continue its visit on Wednesday, covering areas like Dhali, Mahli, Pujarli, Malyana, Chamyana, and Kot Geha, where similar issues are expected to be discussed.
