Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan: A Journey of Dedication, Leadership, and Legal Excellence

In a recent statement, the Supreme Court Collegium announced that Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan will soon step into a new role, filling the vacancy created by the transfer of the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Known for his integrity and deep legal insight, Justice Chauhan has twice served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Born on January 9, 1964, in the serene town of Rohru, Justice Chauhan’s academic journey began at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree with honors from DAV College, Chandigarh, and later pursued law at Panjab University. In 1989, he began his legal career, joining the esteemed chamber of senior advocate Lala Chhabil Das.

Justice Chauhan quickly established himself in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, mastering various branches of law. Over the years, he served as legal advisor to numerous state boards, corporations, financial institutions, and educational bodies. His commitment to justice extended beyond the courtroom—he was a member of several Lok Adalats and was appointed amicus curiae in key environmental and infrastructure-related cases.

His judicial journey formally began when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court in February 2014, and later as a Permanent Judge in November the same year. As Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee, he championed the welfare of children in orphanages, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers across Himachal Pradesh.

Justice Chauhan’s influence reached international platforms as well. In 2019, he represented India in Romania at a global exchange program focused on child welfare reforms—becoming the first judge from his High Court to do so. He also participated in a landmark conference at the Supreme Court of India on the evolving role of the judiciary in a changing world.

Beyond the bench, he played a pivotal role in modernizing the judiciary. As head of the Computer and E-Court Committee, he spearheaded the digital transformation of courts in Himachal Pradesh, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.

Justice Chauhan’s career is a testament to his unwavering dedication to justice, innovation, and public service. As he prepares to take on his new responsibilities, his journey continues to inspire the legal fraternity and the nation alike.
