IMD predicts increased Monsoon intensity from 29 July onwards in Himachal

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant escalation in monsoon activity over the next 4-5 days, extending until August 3. This period will likely bring widespread moderate rainfall, along with occasional thunderstorms and lightning.

In the past 48 hours, the intensified South West monsoon across Himachal Pradesh has caused considerable loss of life and property, severely disrupting vehicular traffic. Among various locations, Ghamroor recorded the highest rainfall at around 96 mm, followed by Jubberhatti with 63 mm, and Chowari with 57 mm. Other notable rainfall measurements include Dharamshala at 48 mm and Solan at 42 mm in the past 24 hours.

From July 29 to August 3, heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Mandi, Kullu, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur. Very heavy rainfall is specifically anticipated in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur. Despite these conditions, the average minimum and maximum temperatures are predicted to remain normal.

The IMD has also warned of a high risk of landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas, including Kullu, Solan, Sirmaur, Shimla, and Kinnaur. Major cities may experience waterlogging on roads, leading to increased travel times. The advisory recommends providing mechanical support to horticultural crops and staking vegetables to prevent damage. Vulnerable structures such as kutcha houses, walls, and huts may suffer minor damage. There is also a risk of landslides, mudslides, land slips, and land sinks. Roads may flood, low-lying areas could become waterlogged, and underpasses might close due to the heavy downpour. Additionally, rainfall and fog may occasionally reduce visibility.

The IMD advises ensuring excess water is drained from crop fields to prevent stagnation. It also urges residents to stay updated with local weather reports and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of heightened monsoon activity.
