IIT Mandi Alumnus Nitish Kumar Wins Historic Paralympics Gold in Badminton
Nitish Kumar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning India’s first Paralympics Gold Medal in the Men’s Singles SL3 Badminton event. In a nail-biting final at the ongoing Paris Paralympic Games, Nitish defeated Daniel Bethell with a score of 2-1 on Monday.
A graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT Mandi (2014-2018), Nitish is the first IIT graduate to win a Paralympics Gold Medal for India. His journey to this historic victory is as inspiring as it is extraordinary.
Born in Rajasthan and now residing in Haryana, Nitish faced a life-changing challenge in 2009 when he lost his leg in a train accident. Despite this setback, he discovered a new passion for badminton, which gave him a renewed sense of purpose.
Competing in the SL3 category, which is designated for players with severe lower limb disabilities, Nitish’s determination and hard work paid off. Starting his badminton journey at IIT Mandi, he has now made history by bringing home a Paralympics Gold Medal for the country.
