HRTC goes digital : 6,000% Surge in cashless transactions
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has achieved a groundbreaking transformation in public transportation by embracing digital innovation, with cashless transactions skyrocketing by over 6,000% in less than a year.
From just 40 daily digital payments in March 2024, HRTC now processes an impressive 2,467 such transactions daily as of January 2025. The adoption of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) has also seen remarkable growth, climbing from 2 daily transactions in September 2024 to 806 in January 2025. These numbers underscore a rapid shift in commuter behavior towards digital payments, driven by HRTC’s commitment to modernizing its services.
Rohan Thakur, MD of HRTC, attributed this phenomenal growth to the leadership and vision of Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. “This success is a testament to integrating technology with public transportation and reflects HRTC’s role as a pioneer in innovation,” Thakur said.
The digital revolution has brought tangible benefits to both commuters and HRTC. Faster transactions, reduced dependence on cash, and enhanced operational transparency have significantly improved the commuting experience. Echoing this success, a survey revealed that 75% of Himachal’s public prefer HRTC over private operators for its reliability, service quality, and seamless digital payment systems.
Frequent travelers have lauded the initiative. Varun Azad, a regular commuter, praised the move as “great work.” Another traveler, Dewansh Negi, highlighted the importance of leadership, saying, “With clear intentions and set goals, nothing is impossible.”
Passengers are hopeful that HRTC’s progress will inspire private operators to follow suit. Atul, a Shimla resident, remarked, “Perhaps this change will push private operators to at least provide proper receipts for payments.”
By prioritizing technological advancements and enhancing passenger convenience, HRTC is not only transforming travel in Himachal Pradesh but also setting an inspiring benchmark for others to emulate.
