Himachal’s Hospitals Get a Digital Watchdog: CCTV Cameras to Boost Transparency and Patient Care
In a move that blends technology with accountability, the Himachal Pradesh government is stepping up its game to ensure hospitals run more efficiently and transparently. No more late-arriving doctors, long patient waits, or unchecked staff behavior—thanks to a sweeping plan to install high-tech CCTV cameras across 15 major health institutions in the state.
A Watchful Eye from Shimla
The initiative, led by the National Health Mission (NHM), will allow real-time monitoring of hospital activities directly from the NHM Directorate in Shimla. With just a click, officials can now see what’s happening in OPDs, emergency rooms, wards, pharmacies, and even parking lots. From tracking when doctors clock in to how long they spend with patients, the system promises to bring a new level of transparency to public healthcare.
Bilaspur Leads the Way
The Regional Hospital in Bilaspur is already ahead of the curve, with over 40 CCTV cameras in place. That number is set to cross 100 under the new plan. A team from Shimla recently visited the hospital to map out camera placements, ensuring every critical corner is covered.
24/7 Surveillance for Safer Spaces
A dedicated control room in Shimla will be staffed round-the-clock by trained technical experts. Their job? To keep an eye on hospital operations and respond swiftly to any signs of negligence, misconduct, or patient complaints.
Why This Matters
Hospitals often become flashpoints for disputes—be it miscommunication between staff and patients or allegations of misconduct. The recent incident in a Kolkata hospital served as a wake-up call, prompting Himachal’s health department to act. These cameras aren’t just about discipline—they’re also about safety for both healthcare workers and visitors.
Where Cameras Are Going Up
The 15 hospitals selected for this digital upgrade include:
- Regional Hospital Bilaspur
- Zonal Hospital Dharamshala
- Civil Hospitals in Palampur, Nurpur, Rohru
- Deen Dayal Upadhyay Zonal Hospital, Shimla
- MGMMSC Khaneri-Rampur
- Himachal Hospital of Mental Health & Rehabilitation, Shimla

Voices from the Ground
“This is a major step toward improving hospital accountability,” said Dr. A.K. Singh, Medical Superintendent of Bilaspur Hospital. “We’re identifying key locations for camera installation, and all footage will be monitored from Shimla under NHM.”
This digital surveillance initiative marks a turning point in Himachal’s healthcare system—where technology meets trust, and patient care gets the attention it truly deserves.
