Himachal’s 108 Ambulance Service: Over 4 Lakh Emergencies Handled in Three Years

The 108 National Ambulance Service (NAS), operated by Medswan Foundation, has emerged as a lifeline for Himachal Pradesh, handling over 4,01,750 medical emergencies in the last three years. Averaging one emergency every four minutes, the service provides free, round-the-clock assistance under the guidance of the National Health Mission (NHM) and the state government. As it marks its third anniversary, the initiative celebrates its unwavering dedication to saving lives across the hill state.

Sachin Patyal, Ambulance Manager of NAS-108, shared that the service operates with 248 ambulances under NAS-108 and 148 under JSSK-102, responding to over 2,000 calls daily. On average, it manages 375 emergencies each day, including three childbirths. The team has successfully handled 73,770 pregnancy-related emergencies, assisted in 2,873 safe deliveries, and ensured compassionate care for mothers in need.

The service’s comprehensive reach extends beyond maternity care. It has addressed over 41,000 respiratory emergencies, 30,000+ cardiac cases, 15,500+ trauma incidents, and 5,000 stroke-related emergencies. Additionally, it has played a crucial role in handling 25,250 police-related emergencies and 1,790 fire-related incidents. The accompanying 102 Ambulance Service has further strengthened maternal and child healthcare by providing drop-back services to more than 92,970 beneficiaries in the same period.

Behind this monumental effort is a dedicated team of approximately 1,500 professionals, including ambulance pilots and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Patyal praised their relentless commitment, emphasizing how their work has saved countless lives while ensuring dignity and care for patients in distress.

Looking ahead, Medswan Foundation, in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh Government, plans to replace aging ambulances in a phased manner to enhance the efficiency and reliability of this vital service. As the 108 Ambulance Service continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of hope and care for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
