Himachal Weather Turns Moody Again: Snowfall in Hills, Hailstorm Hits Shimla

Himachal Pradesh’s weather is once again showing its unpredictable side. After noon today, fresh snowfall began gracing the peaks of Lahaul-Spiti, while several regions including Shimla were drenched in rain and battered by hailstorms. In Shimla, a strong spell of hail lasted for nearly 20 minutes, leading to a sharp dip in temperatures.

The Meteorological Department has warned of more weather surprises in the next 12 hours. Thunderstorms with hail are likely in scattered parts of Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur. An orange alert has been issued for strong winds in Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu districts.

There’s also a chance of light snowfall at some spots in the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, and Kangra. Meanwhile, light showers are expected in Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan. On April 11, weather watchers anticipate rainfall in the higher altitudes of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti. Some parts of Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan may see light to moderate rain.

April 12 could bring light snowfall and rain to scattered areas in the upper regions of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, and Kangra.

Kuldeep Srivastava, Director of the Meteorological Department, confirmed that a Western Disturbance is currently active over the state. “Its impact is being felt in many areas today. Rain and hail have hit several places, including Shimla, while light snowfall is occurring in higher regions. We’ve issued an alert for the next 12 hours for heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. The temperature has already dropped noticeably due to the changing weather,” he added.

Stay warm and stay safe — Himachal’s skies have clearly decided to stir things up.
