Himachal to finally break its 70-day dry spell with Rain and Snow
Himachal Pradesh is gearing up for much-needed wet weather, expected to end an over 70-day dry spell that has gripped most parts of the state since the monsoon’s retreat in September. Except for a few high-altitude regions in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, the state has remained predominantly dry, raising concerns for agriculture and horticulture.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance is set to bring rain and snow on December 8 and 9. This system is expected to provide relief to farmers and orchardists who have been battling one of the driest Novembers in 123 years. The IMD’s latest forecast indicates scattered to isolated rain and snow over the western Himalayan region starting December 7 and extending to the adjoining plains of northwest India by December 8.
Rain in most districts and snowfall in key tourist spots
Shimla city is likely to experience light rain, while Kufri and surrounding areas may witness light to moderate snowfall on December 8 and 9. Similar precipitation is expected in districts like Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, Kangra, and Kullu. Lower regions, including Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Hamirpur, may see light rain. The IMD also forecasts isolated thunderstorms with lightning in districts such as Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur.
Fog advisory and temperature to dip
A drop of 3–4°C in both minimum and maximum temperatures is likely across many parts of the state. Between December 6 and 12, maximum temperatures in high-altitude regions are expected to range from 10–16°C, while mid-hill areas will see 16–20°C, and lower hills and plains could experience 18–22°C. Minimum temperatures are predicted to be significantly below normal during this period.
Dense fog may develop in some areas, particularly around the Bhakra Dam reservoir (Bilaspur) and Balh Valley (Mandi) during the early hours of December 10. However, precipitation is expected to taper off after December 10.
A Lifeline for Farmers and Orchardists
The prolonged dry spell had raised alarms among agricultural and horticultural communities, particularly in apple-growing districts like Shimla, Kinnaur, and Mandi. Experts believe the upcoming rain and snow will bring much-needed relief, especially for winter crops and water sources. The precipitation will rejuvenate soil moisture, benefiting crops like wheat, barley, and other Rabi staples.
For apple orchards, the snow will provide essential chilling hours needed for proper flowering and fruit setting, while moisture-rich soil will support healthy tree growth. The wet spell will also replenish water sources, ensuring a steady supply for drinking and irrigation.
Boost to Tourism Amid Caution
Popular tourist destinations like Kufri, Manali, and Chitkul are expected to receive fresh snow, adding to their winter allure and boosting tourism activities. However, the IMD has issued an advisory urging residents and tourists to exercise caution while traveling to higher altitudes due to slippery roads and possible disruptions.
Warmer and drier winter predicted
Despite the short-term respite, the IMD has predicted a warmer and drier winter overall, extending through February 2025. While this raises long-term concerns, the anticipated rain and snow offer immediate relief to multiple sectors across Himachal Pradesh.
This wet spell is a much-needed blessing, providing a glimmer of hope for farmers, orchardists, and residents as they prepare for the challenges of the coming months.
