Himachal receives fresh snowfall: Travel disruptions and cold wave grips the region

Himachal Pradesh witnessed a significant weather shift on Tuesday evening, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The state experienced thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain, along with snowfall in several areas. Popular hill destinations like Lahaul-Spiti, Narkanda, Fagu, and Reckong Peo were blanketed in fresh snow, affecting travel and daily life.

Snowfall Disrupts Travel in Key Regions

Tourist hotspots such as Narkanda, Fagu, and Pangi in Chamba received a fresh layer of snow, while Lahaul-Spiti experienced moderate snowfall. This led to major travel disruptions, particularly on the Manali-Rohtang Tunnel route and roads connecting Sisu, Koksar, and Keylong. In places like Fagu, Narkanda, and Kharapatthar, traffic delays were reported due to slippery roads.

Meanwhile, Shimla and its surrounding areas recorded 3-4 mm of rainfall, which was not enough to break the prevailing dry spell. The city remained under hazy conditions with light fog, and the cold intensified as temperatures dropped further. Lahaul-Spiti experienced a significant dip in minimum temperatures, adding to the winter chill.

Key Roads Blocked Due to Heavy Snowfall

The fresh snowfall has rendered several key routes in Lahaul-Spiti inaccessible. Major road closures include:

  • Darcha to Shinkula (towards Kargil) and Darcha to Sarchu (NH-003, Leh) – Both routes have been shut after Jispa received approximately 6 inches of snow.
  • Keylong to Darcha, Keylong to Atal Tunnel (NH-003), and ATR to Manali – These roads are blocked with snow depths ranging from 6 inches to 1 foot.
  • Koksar to Manali via Rohtang (NH-003) – The route remains closed, with about 1 foot of snow at Sissu.
  • Tandi to Udaipur and Udaipur to Tindi (Kadhu Nullah) – These roads are blocked with 5-6 inches of snow.
  • Koksar to Losar via Kunzum Top – Closed due to 1.5 feet of snow accumulation at Koksar.
  • Kaza to Losar (NH-505) – Blocked with around 6 inches of snow at Kaza, while the Sumdo to Kaza route remains open despite light snowfall at Sumdo.

Authorities Urge Caution for Travelers

Authorities have advised tourists and commuters to avoid unnecessary travel in snow-affected areas and stay updated with official advisories before planning any trips. Those venturing into higher altitudes are urged to use snow chains on vehicles and take necessary precautions while navigating slippery roads.

With cold wave conditions intensifying, residents and travelers are bracing for further weather challenges in the coming days.
