Himachal Moves Toward Future-Ready Learning with AI Education in Schools

In a forward-looking step, the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education has begun preparations to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based education in schools across the state. The initiative aims to equip students with an early understanding of emerging technologies, with plans to potentially introduce AI learning from Class VI onwards.

As part of the groundwork, the Board has already started discussions on designing an appropriate curriculum. Initial consultations have been held with a private company from the computer and communication sector to explore how AI can be integrated into school education in a practical and student-friendly manner.

The proposed curriculum is expected to combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning, helping students not only understand the basics of AI but also see how it applies to everyday life and future career opportunities. The Board is considering offering AI as an optional subject, allowing interested students to explore the field without adding pressure on the existing academic framework.

Officials believe that introducing AI at the school level will help students adapt to a rapidly evolving digital world and build skills that are becoming increasingly important across industries.

Sharing updates on the initiative, Board Secretary Dr. Major Vishal Sharma said a workshop has already been conducted in collaboration with industry experts. He added that the Board is now seeking inputs from teachers, academicians and subject experts from schools, colleges and universities to develop a curriculum suited to different age groups and learning levels.

All feedback and suggestions will be compiled into a detailed proposal, which will then be submitted to the state government for approval. The actual rollout of AI education in schools will take place only after the proposal is formally cleared.

Before finalising the curriculum, the Board plans to hold wider consultations to ensure that the subject remains balanced, practical and engaging for students. The focus, officials say, is on building basic awareness and foundational knowledge of AI from an early stage, in line with the growing importance of technology-driven sectors in today’s world.

With this initiative, Himachal Pradesh is taking a step toward preparing its students for the future of education and employment, where digital skills and technological awareness will play a crucial role.
